Company Confidential: Sr. Field Application Engineer

 

Our client is seeking an experienced and technically accomplished Sr. Field Application Engineer to lto serve as the technical backbone of their customer-facing operations in the wireless telematics and GPS fleet management space.

 

About the Role  

 

This critical role goes beyond field support. The Sr. FAE takes full accountability for the testing process, leads the configuration and enhancement of customer solutions, mentors the FAE team, and plays a direct role in closing business. As a senior member of the team reporting to the Director/VP of Sales, this individual will work cross-functionally with leadership to ensure the highest standards of quality, customer satisfaction, and technical excellence 

 

Key Responsibilities 

 

1. Customer Technical Leadership 

  • Serve as the primary technical liaison with customers on all hardware, firmware, wireless, and device management matters.
  • Understand customer requirements and develop solutions that meet their technical and commercial needs.
  • Lead the configuration, enhancement, and support of customer solutions, internally developed applications, and web services.
  • Assist customers with portal setup, device integration, API usage, and ramp-up activities.
  • Customize and add new features to software packages and internally developed applications based on end-user requests. 

 

2. Testing, Quality & Process Ownership 

  • Take full accountability for every aspect of the testing process — device and firmware testing, validation, and installation best practices.
  • Ensure test equipment and processes meet the highest standards of accuracy and effectiveness.
  • Document and execute test plans, track results, and publish findings.
  • Report, track, and escalate anomalies discovered during testing, driving continuous improvement and resolution.
  • Interpret CAN/OBDII data and analyze large datasets to support troubleshooting and product improvement. 

 

3. Application & Solution Maintenance 

  • Lead day-to-day maintenance of various customer-facing and internally developed applications.
  • Resolve reported device and service failures; develop internal tools for troubleshooting as needed.
  • Verify that telematics services meet specifications and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Knowledge of GPS, GSM, CDMA/EvDO, and LTE technologies required; working understanding of IT infrastructure with ability to advance to expert level.  

 

4. Team Mentorship & Collaboration 

  • Teach, mentor, and motivate FAE team members to enhance their skills and technical knowledge.
  • Collaborate with the Manager to plan and deliver daily and weekly team goals.
  • Work cross-functionally with leadership in other departments including engineering, product management, and operations.
  • Support the sales team on new account development and expansion of product base at existing accounts.

 

5. Pre- & Post-Sales Support 

  • Assist in formulating product specifications for customer requirements during pre-sale activities.
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of their role in closing sales; actively collaborate with sales on design wins.
  • Support customer field returns and gather actionable feedback for internal teams.
  • Contribute technical application notes, product documentation, and user guides.
  • Travel to customer sites domestically and internationally while maintaining project goals and schedules. 

 

Qualifications & Requirements 

  • Minimum 5 years of directly related experience in a Field Applications Engineer, Customer Support Engineering, or Technical Sales Engineering role, preferably in automotive or telematics hardware.
  • Mastery of Field Application Engineer roles and responsibilities — this role builds upon and leads from that foundation.
  • Proficiency in GPS, GSM, CDMA/EvDO, and LTE technologies; CAN/OBDII data interpretation; hardware and firmware troubleshooting.
  • Experience with scripting, AT commands, SIM card functionality, device management, and cellular connectivity.
  • Familiarity with Agile processes and Jira; ability to analyze and work with large datasets.
  • Excellent technical writing skills; ability to produce application notes, test plans, and user documentation. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, or related field — or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed.

The good faith salary range for this position is $72,000 – $150,000 per year, commensurate with experience, qualifications, and skills. Final compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors including relevant experience, technical expertise, and industry sales experience. This range represents a good faith estimate of the compensation that COHR Consulting’s client reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of posting
